ABSTRACT

Purpose: To compare the efficacy of physiological, non?detergent eyelid wipes with conventional lid hygiene in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Methods: Fifty participants with MGD were recruited and randomized into two groups. Participants in group I used Evolve Pure? Eyewipes twice a day to clean the eyelid debris along with standard therapy (antibiotic and lubricants) and participants in group II followed lid hygiene with warm compresses along with standard therapy. Symptoms, ocular surface assessment (lipid layer thickness, tear meniscus height, non?invasive tear film breakup time, and meibography), slit?lamp biomicroscopy (eyelash contamination, meibomian gland blockage, meibomian gland secretion, and meibomian gland telangiectasia) and tear film osmolarity were noted at baseline and 90 days after therapy. Results: Significant improvement in symptoms and signs of MGD was observed in both groups after treatment (P < 0.001); however, the clinical improvement was better with the use of eyelid wipes. Lipid layer thickness increased significantly in group I (P = 0.0006) and group II (P = 0.0002), which was maintained even after adjusting for sociodemographic variables such as age, sex, and severity score of symptoms and signs. Conclusion: Lipid layer thickness of the tear film is a sensitive marker in monitoring response to treatment in patients with MGD. The use of physiological detergent?free eyelid wipes is non?inferior to lid hygiene and warm compresses, which remains the mainstay for treatment of MGD; the clinical improvement with eyelid wipes was noted to be better

ABSTRACT

@#AIM: To discuss the clinical efficacy of tobramycin dexamethasone eye ointment combined with OCuSOFT tea tree oil cleaning wipes in the treatment demodex blepharitis.<p>METHODS: Prospective clinical study. Totally 72 patients with demodex blepharitis were selected. They were randomly divided into three groups. The experimental group was treated with tobramycin dexamethasone eye ointment combined with OCuSOFT tea tree oil cleaning wipes. After 30d of treatment, the symptom score, the number of eyelash mites and the score of clinical signs were observed under slit lamp. The data before and after treatment were compared by paired sample <i>t</i>-test and analysis of variance.<p>RESULTS: There was significant difference in demodex count among the three groups before and after treatment(<i>P</i><0.01). The difference of total symptom score was statistically significant(<i>F</i>=20.05, <i>P</i><0.01). The difference of total score of physical signs was statistically significant(<i>F</i>=8.10, <i>P</i><0.01).<p>CONCLUSION: Tobramycin dexamethasone eye ointment combined with OCuSOFT tea tree oil cleaning wipes is effective in the treatment of demodex blepharitis. Tea tree oil cleaning wipes are portable, easy to preserve and not easy to deteriorate.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The microbiological surveillance of endoscopes and automated flexible endoscope reprocessing have been proven to be two of the most difficult and controversial areas of infection control in endoscopy. The purpose of this study was to standardize a sampling method for assessing the effectiveness of standard reprocessing operating procedures for flexible fiberoptic laryngoscopes (FFLs). METHODS: First, the sampling devices were directly inoculated with Bacillus atrophaeus spores; second, tissue non tissue (TNT) wipes were tested on artificially contaminated surfaces and on FFLs. RESULTS: Comparison of the sponges, cellulose, and TNT wipes indicated that the TNT wipes were more effective in releasing spores (93%) than the sponges (49%) and cellulose wipes (52%). The developed protocol provides a high efficiency for both collection and extraction from the stainless steel surface (87% of the spores were removed and released) and from the FFL (85% of the spores were removed and released), with relatively low standard deviations for recovery efficiency, particularly for the analysis of the FFL. CONCLUSIONS: TNT wipes are more efficient for sampling surface areas, thereby aiding in the accuracy and reproducibility of environmental surveillance.

ABSTRACT

Wet wipes are being increasingly used because of their convenience. Particularly, oral wet wipes are useful for regular cleaning of a baby's mouth after birth. Therefore, the consumption of oral wet wipes has increased over the past few years and a variety of products are commercially available. However, product information on safety is not sufficiently provided and still raises doubts regarding adverse effects. To confirm the safety of wet wipes as an oral hygiene item and provide information for their use, we investigated the cytotoxicity of oral wet wipes and verified the underlying mechanism. The anti-bacterial effect of oral wet wipes was analyzed using the disk diffusion method. The cytotoxic effects of oral wet wipes were observed based on morphological changes using microscopy and determined using a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay in gingival epithelial cells and gingival fibroblasts. Evaluation of apoptosis by oral wet wipes was explored using propidium iodide flow cytometric analysis and a terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate (dUTP) nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay. Apoptosis-related molecules were also analyzed using western blotting. Five types of oral wet wipes were tested, and two products from Fisher-Price and Dr. Kennedy revealed strong cytotoxic effects on gingiva epithelial cells and gingiva fibroblasts, although they also showed intense anti-bacterial effects on oral bacteria. Cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase and apoptosis were observed based on treatment of extracts from Fisher-Price and Dr. KENNEDY. Relatively high TUNEL levels, reduction of proliferating cell nuclear antigen and cyclin-dependent kinase 4 expression, and fragmentation of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase were also elucidated. These results suggest that commercial oral wet wipes could exert cytotoxic influences on oral tissue, although there are anti-bacterial effects, and careful attention is required, especially for infants and toddlers.

ABSTRACT

Objective @#To compare the bacteriostatic effect of two disinfections on the surface of frequently touched objects in dental clinic, so as to provide the reference for proper disinfection.@*Methods @#Specimens from the control panel and surface of examination table of comprehensive treatment chair were taken for bacterial culture, record the bacteria content on the objects surface. Then disinfect the objects surface by using 500 mg/L chlorine-containing disinfectant (routing group) and Gamma disinfecting wet wipes (test group) respectively, compare the qualified rate of bacteriostasis on object surfaces between two group. @*Results @# After 10-minute disinfection on surfaces, bacteriostatic rate of routing group and test group was (91.66 ± 7.52)% and (93.87 ± 6.12)% respectively, there was no significant difference between two groups (P > 0.05).@*Conclusion@#The quaternary ammonium disinfectant for the dental clinic objects can reach the same effect as chlorine-containing disinfectant.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE:To establish a method for the content determination of geniposide in TCM callus convenient wipes drug solution. METHODS:HPLC was performed on the column of Agilent Zorbax SB-C18 with mobile phase of acetonitrile-0.1%phosphoric(10:90,V/V)at the flow rate of 1.0 ml/min,column temperature was 30 ℃,detection wavelength was 236 nm and the volume was 10 μl. RESULTS:The linear range of geniposide was 0.104 1-1.041 μg (r=0.999 8);RSDs of precision, stability and reproducibility tests were all lower than 2%;recovery was 99.04%-100.82%(RSD=0.85%,n=6). CONCLUSIONS:The method is simple, accurate, reproducible, and can be used for the content determination of geniposide in TCM callus convenient wipes drug solution.
